What is a Mil?

“Mil” is an imperial industrial thickness unit — one-thousandth of an inch. 1 mil = 0.001 inch = 0.0254 mm = 25.4 microns.

Why is 1 mil less common on fully automated bagging machines (many machines recommend 1.5 mil or thicker)?

At 25.4 microns, 1 mil film is very thin and soft, which can cause problems on high-speed automated lines:

• Poor air-jet opening: the film is soft enough that it can fold instead of staying open when the machine’s air jet hits it, leading to missed loads or jams.
• Static cling: thin film generates static easily and can stick to rollers or feed paths during high-speed operation.
• Heat-seal sensitivity: 1 mil film has a low melt threshold, so seal temperature and pressure need to be precisely controlled — too much and the seal burns through or wrinkles.

What are the most common issues with 1 mil rollstock, and how are they fixed?

• Seal splitting or burn-through: lower the machine’s heat seal temperature, or shorten the dwell time.
• Bags sticking together or not opening cleanly: make sure the film is produced with the right amount of slip agent and anti-blocking agent, and clean static buildup from the machine regularly.

Should 1 mil film be LDPE or LLDPE?

At only 1 mil thick, film needs enough strength to survive the pulling and feeding forces on a bagging machine without tearing. We typically use an LDPE/LLDPE blend — LLDPE significantly improves tensile, tear, and puncture resistance, giving the film enough industrial-grade toughness to hold up at this thin gauge.
